Painting for Inclusivity: Transforming Kibarani School of Deaf

At Kibarani School of Deaf in Kilifi, the sun rose on a mission of transformation. Over two days

in late September 2023, our team of dedicated volunteers set out to enhance the school's

infrastructure and create a more inspiring learning environment for the students. In collaboration

with Pwani Youth Network and VSO Kenya, we embarked on a journey with a theme close to

our hearts: "Inclusive Education for People with Disabilities." This theme underscored our

commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring that all students, regardless of their

abilities, have access to quality education. The school of Kibarani Deaf is the only school that

caters for children coming from different communities with hearing and speaking difficulties. It is

a boarding primary school with cheerful students. The deputy Headmaster was very welcoming

and showed us where we could do our paintings.

Painting for a Purpose
Day 1 - Friday: Laying the Foundation
Our painting project kicked off on a bright Friday at noon. The day began with preparation, as
we cleaned and primed the walls, setting the canvas for our artistic endeavours. The chosen
paint colours were vibrant and inviting, carefully selected to create an engaging atmosphere for
both the students and the community.
Amid the scorching sun, we persevered, taking regular breaks to rejuvenate our spirits and
quench our thirst under the blazing Kilifi sky. The enthusiasm was palpable as we witnessed the
transformation beginning to take shape.
Day 2 - Saturday: Colors of Hope
On the following day, we returned to the Kibarani School of Deaf, armed with brushes and
determination. The rest of the team who came with us namely Geofrey, Derick and James
joined to help with the finishing of the words on the wall. Etiquette is paramount when referring
to and referring to people who are able differently. Caution should be taken so as to not be
biased.
The second day saw us putting the finishing touches on our masterpiece. We painted the walls
of our final strokes ending our project mission in Kilifi County in the late evening. We could see

some of the students using sign language and showing happiness about the new mural artwork.
We received joy from people passing by and got interested in us doing similar work on their
businesses. Those were great opportunities for us.
With the last stroke of the brush, our artistry was complete. The transformation was astounding.
But it wasn't just about the colours; it was about the hope and promise they symbolized.
