International Youth Week 2020

Last week was Mombasa County's youth week. The county government of Mombasa through it's Department of Youth, Gender, Sports & Cultural Affairs in conjunction with sub-county administrations organized youth conferences in all the six sub-counties of Mombasa from 5th August to 7th August in preparation to the International Youth day which will be marked on 12th of this month. The first youth conference happened at the Changamwe Social Hall and it brought along youths from Changamwe and Jomvu sub counties.

Our organization Pwani Youth Network took part in the exercise and sent a team of ten youth delegates to represent it in the function. The conference was graced by various leaders from the county government with the chief guest being the deputy governor of Mombasa county HE. Mr. William Kingi.

The aim of this event was to collect views of young people as far as solutions to their problems and challenges are concerned. Some of the themes discussed included: Youth involvement in peace and security, the digital space, health especially the participation of youths in the fight against Covid-19 and the economic empowerment of youths among other relevant discussions.

The organization managed to make some proposal through two of it's members, Clinton Ndege and Derrick Omondi. They urged the county assembly to debate a bill that when passed will ensure that 30% of all the employees of the county government are youths.

All in all, the event was a colorful one and everything happened as planned thus making it a success. The youths of Changamwe and Jomvu are hopeful that the views and solutions they presented to address their challenges are going to be implemented by the county government.
